Just 3 more days!!! The season kicks off this Saturday 19th April, and I cannot wait. I've been dropping hints to the 4ths Captain for the last while (fairly big hints like "I'm available please pick me" kind of hints), and he's given assurances that a place will be found for me on the team - sweet! I'll have to make sure all my gear is ready to go this evening in case I need to clean any of it or make any last minute purchases.
One thing I would like is a new pair of spikes. Currently I have a pair of GM shoes with the rubber spikes on the sole – which is fine if it’s dry. But if the grass is any way long and wet, they get little purchase and slippage often ensues. The last thing you want is to be worrying about your footing when you’re sprinting for a catch.
I went hunting for a new pair a few times in the past few weeks – preferably ones with screw-on spikes so I can change them out when we’re playing on the mat. But the problem is, a) there is only one chain of sports shops in Ireland that carry cricket equipment; b) they only have two types of cricket shoe; c) neither of these are available in anything over a size 8; and d) they aren’t getting any new season stock until July-ish!!! Consequently; no new shoes for me. I’d consider purchasing on the net – but I’d like to be sure they fit and are comfortable before buying them.
In other news, we had our club table-quiz fundraiser last night. It was good fun, though the vast majority of the questions had our team hazarding guesses – but despite this, we still managed to beat 4 other teams!!! (and lose to 10, but that’s inconsequential :D). There were about 60 people there, but of these, only 14 were current club members – the rest being former members and friends of members. This is a bit disappointing considering we would expect well over 60 people to turn out for the club over the course of this season. I’m sure plenty of people have valid excuses – but I’m equally sure there were some just weren’t bothered going along … pity.
Anyway, we’ve our last indoor net tomorrow, from then on we’re hoping to get two outdoor training sessions a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I didn’t get a chance to go down to Marlay by myself this week, and I probably won’t before Friday. Not ideal preparation for the first game of the season, but it’ll have to do.
Hopefully I’ll get a chance Saturday evening or Sunday to update on here. Here’s hoping it’ll be good news!
